Today, his Bell Gardens, California living room is replete with trophies and other trappings of his phenomenal success in tournament poker. “The Master” has won more than 75 major tournaments, racked up six World Championship gold bracelets, amassed prize money in excess of $4 million, and sat at a staggering number of final tables, including the World Poker Tour’s season one Invitational at the Commerce Casino. He was also named Card Player Magazine’s “Player of the Year” in 1997, 2001, and 2003.When Nguyen arrived in Los Angeles, he did not speak a word of English, but began taking ESL courses and landed a job as a machinist with Sun Net Tool.When a friend suggested a weekend junket to Las Vegas, Nguyen went along for the ride and found himself most intrigued by the poker room, where the players played against each other instead of the house.
