There are poker players. And then, there’s The Master. Men “The Master” Nguyen fled Vietnam in the dark of night by boat in 1978. Today, his Bell Gardens, California living room is replete with trophies and other trappings of his phenomenal success in tournament poker. “The Master” has won more than 75 major tournaments, racked up six World Championship gold bracelets, amassed prize money in excess of $4 million, and sat at a staggering number of final tables, including the World Poker Tour’s season one Invitational at the Commerce Casino. He was also named Card Player Magazine’s “Player of the Year” in 1997, 2001, and 2003.When Nguyen arrived in Los Angeles, he did not speak a word of English, but began taking ESL courses and landed a job as a machinist with Sun Net Tool.When a friend suggested a weekend junket to Las Vegas, Nguyen went along for the ride and found himself most intrigued by the poker room, where the players played against each other instead of the house. He immediately began analyzing the game and examining the strategies behind every hand. He taught himself to play with no books or lessons.Now, his nickname “The Master” refers not only to his poker prowess, but to the fact that he teaches and mentors other Vietnamese players.Nguyen, a Buddhist, has used his winnings to help build temples and schools in his native Vietnam.
