Name: Evelyn Ng Date of Birth: unknown Place of Birth: Toronto, Canada Profile At 5’11 without her stilettos, she looks more like a supermodel than a poker player, and she freely admits that she’s a “girly girl” who loves to dress up, look good, and party. But 27-year old Toronto native Evelyn “Evy” Ng has played poker professionally since her teens, delighting in putting the “old boys” in their place. “If you ask me, women have as much or even greater ability to read players, to analyze, strategize…It’s a mental game,” she says.Until recently, Ng was a relative unknown in the high-stakes poker world. But she quickly became a favorite with viewers of the World Poker Tour after she edged out fellow female luminaries like Annie Duke, Jennifer Harman and Kathy Liebert to finish second in the series’ highly rated Ladies Night Invitational tournament during season one.Ng, who hustled pool as a 14 and 15-year old, first learned her game as a 17- year-old in Toronto’s underground card clubs. She became a blackjack dealer, then started dealing poker. Eventually, Ng became more interested in playing than dealing and her timing was perfect: charity casinos had just legalized poker, creating a new influx of players. She did well and over the next several years turned pro.Today, Ng plays poker 5 days a week, 6 hours a day. She aspires to someday chronicle her gambling experiences in a novel or a screenplay. |
